New PassionOrigami website

Post by TERRY Nicolas »

Since some years, I'm working on the project to highly update my old html website Passionorigami.com

I've 3 goald in this new project :
- Display news of origami community (with a focus on new creations)
- Have a better presention for Authors' pages
- Have a better display of free Diagrams, CP, Articles....etc

For now, I focused mainly on the news page.
I had the idea to classify the news into categories.
You can see that on the test website here : http://origami.pub.free.fr/index.php (you can click on categories on top of the page).

For example, if you mainly interest in Geometric Tesselation, just click on "Geometric" button in the header part.
If you want to see the last events or contest, just click on the "EVent" button.

In each category, you will have news, but also last addition and any news realated to the category.

Now, we are working on the final version of the website and it's time to remove or fix interesting ideas.
My question for you is :

Do you prefer news classify by categories ?
Or do you prefer to have only one page of news like this page without classification : http://www.origami-shop.com/actualite-n ... l-281.html

In other words, does this classification have an interest for you and should I maintain in the final version of the website ?

Thanks for your advice.

Nicolas

I do really like the classification of the news section.

I do also like the categories listed in the complete list, too. e.g. "DIAGRAM : fish by hsi-hua". So that you can easily tell what the news is about.

If you could incorporate both, that would be great!

Also, it might be a good idea to put the subsections in the menu on the left. The same way that you have "My Artworks", "The Artists", etc. under the heading of "Gallery", you could put "Classics", "Geometric", etc. under the heading of "News".

In any case, however it is presented, I think classifying the news is a very good idea.

Actually, it would be nice to have both.
A main news page where all the news entries are merged together in one view, and then the category pages with only the specific news.
The main news page should list the category together with the news entry though.
So long and keep folding ^_^

First of all, I love the new site.

Secondly, I like the idea of the news categories, but I got a small point about it. When I first checked that header I didn't really knew what it was for. I thought Geometric, was about things regarding geometry in origami (in the direction of math), diagrams/cp the section where I could find diagrams and cp's, which are only the site, etc. So a small indication that it is about the division in categories of news in Origami Land would be nice, like: News Categories: Classic, Geometric .... Events, WOW.

In conclusion, keep it in the final version of site :)

with the old version you'll probably pick some more information. with a classification you'll just browse the section you're most interested in ...
so i'd prefer the old style to widen my horizon continually.

The new version of Passion Origami is soon ready. Many things need to be fixed yet but I hope to officialy present it in one month.
For now, I need to classify each model of each author in each category : for example each mamals need to go to the mamal category, each complex diagram need to be in the complex category.
Easy but boring because I've 4000 photos and files in the database !!!!!!

It is a daunting and exhausting work to achieve alone. One good friend already help me but we can't achieve the work alone.

That is why I will launch an appeal: if generous volunteers are ready to help me in this classification, I will be very happy.
It's technicaly easy and your participation can be only for one or two authors (among the 65 of the site). But if many of us help in this project, the database could be ready soon and available for the origami community the next month.

In addition to my gratitude, you can discover the site before every body, have access to the administration of the site for a while, manage in details galery of "famous artist" or "new rising star" and see behind the scenes of the website.
I will give you also a link to download several diagrams : parrot, eagle simple and complex, Road Runner, Angel (Boreade), Bonn Cat, Goblin, Pacman Monster, Awful loose, rat, Shark and mouse.

Please contact me at passion.origami (@) free.fr and I will tell you how to help me.

Thanks for your help and your participation in this project.
