I hope you can help me figure it out. I think there goes a sink but I can't do it.

Re: Satoshi Kamiya - Ryu Zin (CP)
yes it is a sink - you can do it at the end of the folding process - just fold it almost the same as the rest of the horns, then sink
Re: Satoshi Kamiya - Ryu Zin (CP)
not related to the ryu-zin, daniel, but can i ask how you got such a perfect looking 180 x 180 cm square? did you tape four squares together, or did you overlap the edges slightly and mc it together?kareshi wrote:I know Ryujins are not the "hot" model anymore, but if anyone else out there wants to make their own 3.5, send me a PM and I might be able to work you through it. It'll take a lot of test folds, so you have to be patient. And you have to have photographic proof of high-level folding, access to MC, that sort of thing. No noobs plz.
also, what do you do about finding a surface large enough to fold on? i notice in some of your pics you have what appears to be some floor boards.
Re: Satoshi Kamiya - Ryu Zin (CP)
I assume you're talking about the cat picture.
-Imagine a square made from two 1x2 rectangles of rice paper, slightly overlapped and bonded with white glue (not a good choice btw)
-Then imagine a cat running across it and tearing holes in it with his claws
-Then having to cut out a big section and patch it with another rectangle
-Then MC-ing it on both sides, just a few square feet at a time, and drying it with a hair dryer
It sounds bad, right? Well, it was. The square was really lumpy and stretched out by the end. Only after the 96 grid was finished did it calm down and behave.
I didn't have a very good area to work - I had to make the 96 grid on my wood floor. From initially rolling out the paper, through measuring, cutting, pasting, patching, MC-ing, drying, up to the end of the 96 grid, I had hit 10 hours.
Don't do it that way. My next one will be a six-sheet assembly, I'll let you know how it works out.

I doubt it. Ryujin seems to be a very straightforward CP, whereas I've come across a few that are confusing.

To fold this model you need thin, strong paper, which can handle lots of pressure and creases. People usually use kraft paper, but I've seen many with other types such as tracing paper. As for size, you should look for anything bigger than 2 meters. The reason for this is that when you start collapsing and shaping the model, you're gonna run into more problems the smaller your paper is. Personally I'd go with a 2,5 meter square of thin kraft paper. If your paper is just a little too thick, it's gonna very hard or even impossible to perform stuff such as the neck twist.
Good luck, you'll definetely need it

Thanks Jonybb
Any Idea where I can find that big of sheet of craft paper? Prefferably along the east coast of the US, But I don't mind that much If I need to ship it. I am looking forward to this!

Try looking in any "art-stores" or places that focus on hobby-materials. Personally I found a company who sold lots of packaging materials, including large rolls of kraft paper (I live in Denmark). I'm not sure how much you'll be able to find where you live. Alternately, you could shop for paper online on stores like Amazon - that usually gives great results.

Re: Satoshi Kamiya - Ryu Zin (CP)
Ok, I will try that. I have already checked my local art store, -Micheals-, and found nothing. :/ Have you completed the model? I would like to see the pictures, if you have uploaded any. Also, if you did, did you fold it to proportion? I know many people shorten the body, which I don't want. [I was looking for a new crease pattern, because All of the crease patterns are very blurry but found one here] SO, after I gather materials, which may be a while, I will post my progress, paper, etc. Thanks again,
I folded 3.5 version last year, back when I wasn't very experienced with this model (check my flickr if you want to see). It's not very pretty, but you get the idea about the proportions. My main problem back then was my paper; too thick and too small. I did fold it in full (didn't shorten it), so it becomes quite long. If you need more indepht advice about this model, I'd suggest other people on this forum like Kafar or Froy - they might be willing to help you. I'm looking foreward to your fold!

Re: Satoshi Kamiya - Ryu Zin (CP)
Thanks again Jonybb.
Found some paper at Origami-Shop.com. It is 50x65 cm. It specifically says it is good for this model. Can I glue them together somehow? Would it work, or be [noticeably] too thick in the overlap? I could use MC, but I have never used MC before so I'm not sure. Normally, because I can't find any paper and it's cheap, I glue two sheets of tissue paper used to put in gift bags with a glue-stick. (It's great for cheap test folds or even professional folds, I highly recommend it. Can be found in any dollar store.) So if anyone has experience with MC and gluing sheets together, I'd much appreciate your help!

Re: Satoshi Kamiya - Ryu Zin (CP)
I suggest doing some test folds before you settle on a final paper, so you can get an idea on the model's thickness, difficulty, comfortable sheet size, that sort of stuff.
Where in the east coast are you? I'm in Virginia and there are some nice paper supply stores here.

Re: Satoshi Kamiya - Ryu Zin (CP)
what paper stores do you mean, daniel? i didn't remember any when i lived there. just michael's. one can certainly buy kraft there, but the stuff is really springy.
just reading about your experiences, daniel, makes my back and knees hurt.
at the end of the day, it sounds like the only practical way to fold the ryu-jin is to use the brown kraft or one of those fadeless rolls that you can get at the local craft store, cut two large rectangles and tape them together (tape, not glue), use cloth pins to clip it like mad to keep it all together while you're folding it, and then glue and wire the crap out of the final result to keep it in place.
