Well I'm pretty new around here so I don't know that anyone would much care, but I joined Origami USA yesterday and am planning to go to the convention. I live in NYC so it's an easy decision.

I'm also, based on Hank's suggestion, going to volunteer to help out. I guess the forms for registration & volunteering will be available in May.

They always want volunteers, but you might go back to the OUSA Web site and ask about the earliest that sign up to volunteer.

Also, you don't have to be an 'extreme' folder in order to teach a class. You only need to be a little organized & patient, and well-practised with the model. You don't want to teach something like the Flapping Bird (unless you are especially entertaining), but any other interesting model is fine, with permission from the creator, if you did not design it.

I was thinking about attenidng for the first time this year, as a new yorker who lives 5 blocks from the convention there realy isnt a good excuse not to. Any tips on getting the most out of the event over and above whats mentioned on the website would be appreciated.

If anyone wants the scoop on restaurants in the vicinity im happy to throw in my 2 cents.

Not sure if they mention it at the OUSA site, but late night folding in the basement of the FIT dorms after the Hospitality room shuts down at midnight is usually fun.

If you can get into a bar, then their is a group that usually heads to Mustang Sally's Saloon at 324 7th Avenue, at least for one evening.

As to the advice to make the best of the experience, plan ahead the classes you would like to take and when you receive your program, mark CLEARLY (which is what I didn't do and missed what would have been my favorite class), the ones you want to attend in ascending order.

Get plenty of sleep the days before, because you won't sleep much during the convention.

Keep yourself hydrated and carry a light jacket or jumper, since that hospitality room is kept very cold.

Enjoy the convention and then post lots of pictures.

The southeast conference in Charlotte was organized by Jonathan Baxter, or at least he was the front man. Turned out he had some visa problems and was deported back to New Zealand after 911. Last I heard he was personal non grata, at least to the US immigration service. No one else ever picked up the ball.

You guys want to hold a convention? Do it. We did. Takes a fair amount of work, but if a few nobodies can do it in Columbus Ohio, I think you guys could easily do it in places like Charleston and Atlanta. I think we'll be teaching a session on how to set up a convention at the New York convention. I am quite serious.

Okay, so the FIT dorms cost $65 a night if you have a roommate (both paying $65), or like $130 if you want the two bed dorm to yourself. Anyone need a roommate? It kind of brings the cost for me into the reasonable realm...
