Hmm... This is ideally not a good starting CP, I don't think I could do it...
I reccomend you start with something else, and work your way up to this model.

My first one was Myajima's scythe wich I found on
Eileen's origami site . It has a crease pattern guide for beginners and I found it really helpful.

My first crease pattern was Hideo Komatsu's Giraffe and it took me several days to figure out, but I learned a lot from it. I was then able to fold his lion and sheep as well.

In general, you should start with the landmark creases in the CP. Then fill in the smaller creases.
It looks streght forward, but I am not great at non-boxpleated CP yet.
My first was the Dobsonfly by Brian Chan.

I have to agree with you. Without boxpleating, I would be having a hard time folding from CPs. Probably a good idea to start with boxpleating, too
