Post by boilerscuba »

So, I know that people usually do amazing things, but I just started folding (I just finished a beluga whale) and am to my second model. I am folding Totoro, a Japanese Anime figure that I have loved since childhood.

I'm stuck though. :(

Here's the link: http://www.josephwu.com/Files/PDF/totoro.pdf

I've gotten till 5 and I'm stuck on 6.

Here's a pic:

and here's my baby Beluga whale! I love belugas! They're so peaceful and lovely.

I want to make a bunch of sea life origamis went I'm better... hopefully!

Thanks so much! I know it's such an easy question for yall here, but I really appreciate it!

Welcome to the forum!

Beluga is easy with very satisfactory result compare to others and their complexity. You chosen very well!

About your model:
A) I did not fold it, I am just estimating from the diagram.
B) You need to make so called "wrap". The triangular flap, which is under the front structure and its point is visible, you must pull out, wrap on the front structure and fold up.
C) I think from the first look, that it is not easy.

I hope it will works and help to you.

See the mountain folds at the top of the model? On the layer behind, valley folds are implied directly behind. As you fold the triangle down along the horizontal valley fold (shown) you open the corners of the top of the model and squash them down (folding both the shown mountain fold and the hidden valley fold on the layer behind.

Need any more help? I'll plug up a camera and make a quick photodiagram.

Here is another way to visualize the fold:
1.) Gently pull right and left flaps partially outward.
2.) Lift center flap upward, gently & partially.
3.) You will see a diamond shape on the right,
and a diamond shape on the left .)
4.) On each diamond, reverse the top valley fold into a mountain fold.
5.) Carefully collapse the whole flap downward .
VOILA !
Hope that this helps .
May I wish success to all who cope with the mountains & valleys of Life,
with all its peaks & depths, as well as Origami .

Is that possible? I would really appreciate that!

I don't see a diamond shape... :(

Thanks guys! Hopefully I can make this!

And gordigami, I love your signature! Did you come up with it? It's pretty awesome!

Thanks again!

I took pictures of both steps 5 and 6:

Here's what you should have going into step 5:

Here is what you should have going into step 6, the angled shot should make it more clear as to what it should look like.

Unfold the non-colored area on the top. The creases you made in step 5 were just precreases setting up step 6. The folds underneath the non-colored layer will stay in place when you re-collapse the model. The folds on the white layer will turn in the opposite direction.

Here is a shot of what your model should look like from behind, after completing step six.

And here is an angled shot of the model from the front.

I think I could have done a video which might have been easier but I haven't tried uploading them on flickr before. If you still need help waybe a vid will work.

Help with Tortoro diagram

Post by gordigami »

Hi boilerscuba :
Hopefully I can clarify the post- Step 5 procedure.
If you follow my steps, as indicated, you will be essentially unfolding
the entire sheet, but not exactly flat.
Don't be afraid to pull the center flap all the way upward . Gently ...
The very top will be a triangle.
The bottom left & right points of the triangle touch the apex of two diamond shapes , one on each side of the sheet.
Each diamond shape has 1 raw edge, 1 upper valley fold, and 2 lower mountain folds.
Simply convert the valley fold, of each diamond, into a mountain fold, then collapse the whole flap downward .
If this is not working, you may need to restart with a new sheet of paper, ensuring that all priliminary folds are crisp and well formed.
Thanks for the kind words about my signature statement.
Yes, it is original, simply my encouragement to tackle the highs & lows of life, with the same enthusiasm as one would do in origami.
Best of luck !
May I wish success to all who cope with the mountains & valleys of Life,
with all its peaks & depths, as well as Origami .

Thanks guys! You guys are awesome! After that I figured out most of the steps, apart from step 11 to 12. I did finish the Totoro, but I butchered his face... :( So I refolded him again, so the edges are crisper, so here is what I have!

Image

and this was my initial interpretation

Image

which is obviously wrong.

I am at lost as of what bringing the raw edges to the front means.

Also Jeoss (Geoff?), I checked out your blog, and you and your family is truly talented! So are you studying marine biology? That's so cool! And if you're just studying biology, that's still cool!

Anyways, thanks guys, I probably would have utterly failed so far without y'all's help. Totally failing at my Asian heritage... yeah

And if anyone who has seen this likes Studio Ghibli's works, guess what I got to saw yesterday?

Image

:D

Anyways, thanks guys!

Happy to see you've made progress. Don't feel like you're 'failing your Asian heritage' though, heh. You're making an effort at least, which is more than most people I know. Everyone needs a little help sooner or later.
