I figured it out. It uses a diagonal grid of 48ths...
using a 19 inch square, turn it to where one of corners is pointing at you, crease the diagonals (they are needed for the collapse anyway) the mark for thirds is about 9 inches in, give or take a millimeter. after that, i just dived each section into half 16 times, getting 48ths. I am yet to begin on actually creasing the cp, but i figure it should follow the grid fairly close, if not exactly on the lines.
hope this helps anyone else who has trouble making this, i will be posting more about it as i do more of the model :D
Oh yeah, i also forgot that to alternate between m/v creases every fold, for me, i creases 12ths with mountain, then flipped the paper over and divided those with mountains. flip over again and divide by mountains for 48ths, and the grid is done.
