Firstly, I would suggest moving back from the model when you take a photo of it. Most cameras (lenses actually, but if the lens and camera are permanently connected it's a moot point) have minimum focusing distances of about 50cm/1.5ft. So, step back and make sure the model/writing is in focus. If you want the model to fill the frame, you can always crop it later.
Secondly, I actually think that the first design is better. The second version just has too much going on for my liking.
I do agree with one of your notes, though; the closed back.
I would keep the general shape, even if you add more details. The usual dragon features would be nice, too - mouth, whiskers, horns, ears. Maybe some scales. Larger wings/fins. A larger tail.
