Jun Maekawa Gift Box

I feel a bit lame for needing help with something as ordinary as a box but here goes. The one model that's resisted me so far.

It's the Gift Box from Jun Maekawa's 'Genuine Origami', pg 61, step 18.

I'm working from the Japanese version but hopefully the English version is basically the same.

I just don't get what I'm meant to do in step 18, how to pull the edges into a square shape.

If anyone can help me understand this you have my eternal gratitude. I've been stuck on this for months...

There should be flaps tucked inside two of the triangular points of the model (from the mountain fold flaps from earlier steps). Gently pull out the flaps and they should form 2 squares. Then continue.

I was totally on the wrong track, I didn't even realise there were flaps to unfold.

I've actually successfully folded this model, but I skipped step 23 because I had no idea what it was trying to tell me to do, especially since the before and after pictures were identical. What IS step 23? Thanks.
