Origami Surprise Endings

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to ask if anyone knew any diagrammed models that had a great surprise ending. For example, a model that you fold that doesn't resemble what it's supposed to be until the final step where you do something (like pull some edges) the model "reveals" itself. I believe there is a ship model that does this? In other words, a model with a great "finishing" effect. Sorry if this sounds confusing.

John Montroll's Angelfish from O for the Enthusiast (or maybe it's Animal O for the Enthusiast) has a great Aha! at the end, and it's also very quick to fold: you rabbit ear two flaps of a birdbase, fold in the sides, and then comes the surprise. It doesn't look at all like an angelfish 'til the very end, and the size of the finished model is startlingly large relative to the starting square.

If so, I've already folded that one and I never realized it was by John Montroll! Here I was thinking it was a traditional angelfish from its simplicity.

Any other ideas would be awesome. Aside from inflatables because I already have so many of those!

I am trying to remember, but I believe David Mitchell's book Origami Alfresco talks about this and has one or two examples where the model is completed face down, then flipped over to reveal the final result.

There is also a method, diagrammed in Montroll's Easy Origami, for folding a traditional pinwheel that has a somewhat clever "ah ha!" transformation in the final step(s).

I also believe that Nick Robinson has some models like this, but I can't name anything off hand.

There was a model I folded once, where you would do all these folds on the outside, and it would effect the inside. Then you could open up the model and Voila! But I forget the model (Lemme refresh my memory).

i have done a model like that, it was the "money turtle" in tanteidan 17. the steps that did that were only the first few, then you worked on the outside, so not really "surprise ending".
