Best paper

Post by phillipcurl »

ok...so..i am in need of some good and fairly cheap paper. I have recently been folding a lot with tracing paper but I go through that so quick, i'll buy a 50 sheet pack, and its gone in a week. I can't apply MC to it either. I have also tried kraft paper and was not impressed by it because of the lack of sizing. i added a ton of MC to it today and I am waiting for it to dry.
another recent paper I am experimenting with is double tissue with MC which is somewhat comparable to origamido, but not really. I am really just thinking about selling off everything i own and ordering a couple thousand sheets of origamido.
so what paper do you guys use?
please link to where you buy it from, and also, I would love for it to be colored as all my curent models are white and boring :L

Normally i use thai unryu or lokta to fold my models i buy my paper from a store called paper-source.

http://www.paper-source.com/cgi-bin/pap ... rs/p5.html

lots of color choices for lokta in my opinion.
but it's a bit pricey but it's worth the purchase.
I also buy thai unryu from there sometimes but i usually go in person to the store they have more colors besides white.

You can't just order thousand of sheets...
Don't you know that it's hand made and only made by two guys?

Again your question arises another question... What type of models do you want to fold? Complex, simple, 3D models?
I would suggest Lokta for intermediate folds. It is relatively cheap and folds well. You can treat it with MC and it doesn't rip easily. However it is rather thick unless you get it somewhere really thin (but that is not usual; it's about 60gms if I remember it right) I order mine at loktapapier.de but I'm not sure if they send it international. Another link for it was mentioned. It is about 1,5€ or 2$ a sheet being 50x70cm.
For more complex folds I suggest tissue paper like silk or unryu. You can get it at Nicolas shop or search this forum for sources. It is thin but usually needs MC to hold the creases in the end. Double tissue works also well.

I usually wet fold watercolor paper for intermediate or 3d models, and for simple or modular I just use kami or copy paper. Usually though, I make the complex or super complex models.

Actually, I believe you can, with some limitations. I seem to recall that at one time Origamido Studio took custom orders, but it was fairly expensive and the entire batch would be the same color/type.

I can't find information on that, but there is a page still up that outlines paying $500 for a day-long paper making workshop. I don't know what the expected yield for that would be; I am sure it would vary wildly based on the thickness, size, duo, etc.

interesting...once I get the money, I may do that.
I think if you do it fast you could probably make at least 25 sheets easily, depending on the batch size. let me see...i have to pay $11.5 for one sheet, that times 25 is 275...thats pretty good.
its a lot of paper, if you even make that much.

A cheaper, but perhaps less effective option, might be to snag a copy of LaFosse's Advanced Origami, which contains some paper making recipes, and find a local paper maker willing to either make some batches for you or let you practice yourself.

I notice that you're in GA. On occasion the Robert C. Williams paper museum offers workshops on making your own paper. I do not know how applicable that would be, but it would probably be an interesting experience, at least. http://ipst.gatech.edu/amp/workshops/index.htm

I will answer your original question about the best paper with a question: "How long is a piece of string?"

alright, i'll check that out.

A piece of string is as long as you make it to be, it could be only several micrometers up to several thousand feet.

Exactly. The best paper depends on the model, desired effect, size, folding method, skill of the folder, etc. Although there are many papers lauded as holy grails of a sort (origamido, ogami, elephant hide, tant, VOG, tissue foil, etc.), no one paper is universally good for all types of model. For example, my preference for most tessellations is glassine, but glassine isn't good for most representational models.

Selecting paper is more like pairing wine with a meal; you have to know the context before a useful answer can be provided.

oh, so for each model or artist, there is a different type of paper thats good for it.

I know for a fact that most of Eric Joisel's models are best made with elephant hide or just thick paper wet folded, so is that kind of what your leading to?
