Manuel Sirgo - Boxer Mantis
(Diagrams found in N. Terry's fantastic Licence to Fold).
I'm confused by the half-open sink in step 51-52... Is the picture in step 52 wrong? It seems like if the layers are arranged like that, with the inside left flap over the layers behind it, then you won't be able to fold the front-most tips down in step 58... They become locked into the pointing-up position if that part of the sink is closed. Or am I missing something?

Step 52 isn't a very good illustration.
Basically, you do the open sink as if the triangle made in step 40 is the same layer as the second triangle behind. I hope this makes sense....
If you have more trouble I can make a photodiagram to help with those steps.

Okay, that's what I did (I think). The direction "mixed sink" was a little misleading, when I hear that I think of a sink with some of the points open-sunk and some of them closed-sunk, not just locking a small flap down in the middle.
Also, to anyone that's folded this before, what kind of paper did you use? I just finished a first attempt with tissue foil, was as careful as I could to have every fold exactly aligned with where it should be, but still, by the time I got to shaping the legs, there were just too many layers to do anything clean... I know part of that is a factor of skill; I have trouble with fine details, but I really think this model needs something thinner than tissue foil... I don't think parchment paper or tracing paper would hold its shape, I feel like just tissue foil is too thin to work with without ripping it, and I don't have any MC. Ideas?

So...I've folded my way to the very end, with the exception of the forelegs. what paper am I pulling out in step 90, exactly? I've tried pulling the very bottom layer out, but it kind of turns the whole claw three dimensional, which warps it slightly at first, and then more as I form those three additional pleats. Anyone have any insight into this? Thanks for the help, all!

Step 30 is a strech-fold, incorporating a kind of rabbit ear with the smaller flap.

squash fold man....squash fold! just reshape the flap using the creases shown into the orientation shown. just kinda open out those flaps and reshape them along the new lines. its really simple when you nkow what your goal is..just make it look like steep 39. then once you have that figured out you ll swivel fold the new flap into place to obtain the results in step 41. i hope this helps some. good luck!

Re: Manuel Sirgo - Boxer Mantis
its just a big open sink. youre going to sink this like you would any other open sink EXCEPT there will be one part of the sink that is closed. open it up and look inside and you should see what im talking about. that part will be close sunk, while the rest will be open sunk. dont pay any attention to that photo in step 52. its trying to illustrate this concept, but doesnt show it very well. hopefully this helps.....good luck!

Hey, I'm working on this currently. I made it to step 72-75, and something seems wrong. I fold the flap up in 72, then I fold the sides in on angle bisectors (step 73). The little bird base made in step 71 is keeping me from folding the flaps in step 74 all the way. Did I do something wrong somewhere? I have the little 3 pointed tail, but it's much smaller. I will continue, has anyone else had this problem?
