So you just taped the inside? That's a good idea. I don't know if I can though, because my paper is white and you can sort of see through it. I think it'd be thinner if I did it with the overlap of paper.mikaorigami wrote:I did not overlap paper and used masking tape. There was tape across where the scales are made the scales 2 or 3 times i think. I was really worried it would make the scales messy or hard to fold, but even with kraft paper it was of very little significance. On the outside of the model it is impossible to tell where the tape went and some of the scales with tape turned out really good because the masking tape was stiff and held creases very well.

No problem. The cp you've found is probably incorrect, meaning there's tons of areas that are not flat foldable, or simply wrong. If you want the official cp without errors, it's in Kamiya's latest book: http://tiny.cc/hwr48wJoe Ruperd wrote: Okay thanks man. Which way did you do it? I got the image on google images. It was on someone's flickr originally I think.

Hmmm. I guess I wasn't aware of that. There are several pictures of the cp, and they all are alike so I figured the cp was legal and free for everyone. I only have so much to spend on supplies, etc, so I don't suppose I will spend it on this. I would love the book though. What models are in the book? Maybe I might actually look into it if there are enough challenging models. Thanks for telling me though!

Re: Satoshi Kamiya - Ryu Zin (CP)
I made like 1cm overlap and it worked great for me...but because I used MC a little part unglued at transition units when I was folding 3.1 and it was pain in ass to fix haha , so make sure to use white glue its a lot better.Joe Ruperd wrote:Just saw this. Okay thanks, very helpful. Are you sure such a small over-lap? I will take your word though.Dj origami wrote:That's always the hardest thing for me to decide...I've been only folding 2.0 , 2.1 ,3.1' s so far and I was attaching 2 sheets that are like 100 cm*150 cm and the other one is 50 cm*150cm...because of that, overlap is not in the horizontal book fold, that means that if you connect it horizontally you might have overlap at shoulder scales or transition units which is kinda bad if your paper is not thin enough and if your glue didn't glue that part nicely, If that's the case I suggest you to make overlap vertically ... Overlap should be about 5 mm-1.5 cm .

I planned on using my normal glue for double tissue: Glue sticks. White glue would probably be better for a big project like this, however.

Re: Satoshi Kamiya - Ryu Zin (CP)
So you are going to use double tissue for ry? Im using a single tissue now... I finished 24*48 grid few min ago... Glue stick works quite good as well.
The book is a bit strange. There's only diagrams for 5 models, mostly from Kamiya, but also from Hojyo Takashi and Komatsu Hideo. What you get instead is >60 pages in japanese about origami techniques in general, like making accurate creases, shaping models, making paper etc. There's also 3 pages with info on the Ryu Zin 3.5. I simply bought the book mainly for the CP, so there's that. Definitely consider it, if not you can try to make your own fixes to your cp. Or you could download the book in pdf, which you're not supposed to do.Joe Ruperd wrote:Hmmm. I guess I wasn't aware of that. No I am using some sort of bleached craft paper. I dont have large enough tissue paper for this model!Dj origami wrote:So you are going to use double tissue for ry? Im using a single tissue now... I finished 24*48 grid few min ago... Glue stick works quite good as well.

Re: Satoshi Kamiya - Ryu Zin (CP)
Watch out for that cp. Like jonybb wrote, it has some serious mistakes, I was stuck on parts for a while before I found out about the official one.
I was also worried the tape would show through the paper because it did when the sheet was on the floor. When collapsed though, its not visible at all. If you want to try with masking tape(i think its pretty standard. mine was kind of off-white), make a test fold of both scale rows with 2 papers taped together. Then you can see both if the thickness will bother your scale shaping and if you can see through it when the body is closed.

I used duct tape on my 2.1 and it didn't show at all

Re: Satoshi Kamiya - Ryu Zin (CP)
I just cut my two 30" by 60" rectangles. I was using an exacto knife on cardboard and made a few small tears in the paper but I think it will be okay. I will need to cut a small bit off anyway to account for the overlap, which I decided to overlap instead of tape.

Agree with Jony... I was really angry when I peceased my 2.1 and I didnt have perfect square...
Anyways I'm almost done with precreasing lower half... If you want I can take progress photos...

Re: Satoshi Kamiya - Ryu Zin (CP)
Don't mean to re-route the existing topic going on right now, but can someone PLEASE help me find paper suitable for 3.5? I'm doing Daniel Brown's ryujin course and it's been going great until the necessary paper sizes became larger and larger. I know that most of you will say "check your local art stores, they have kraft and other papers, or 'tape a few papers together" but I have. And the 3 closest art stores by me closed last year... There's really no art stores for about a 25 mile radius. If anyone can give me links to actual papers big enough for the half base method for 3.5, I would be more appreciative than you know. Thanks in advance!

That's unfortunate... I don't know where you live, but there might be companies that carry packaging materials, who also have paper. Personally, I found a company who carried huge rolls of thin kraft paper (150 cm, 40 gsm) for pretty low prices. Otherwise, there's always Amazon.com. Good luck!Benlewisorigami wrote:Don't mean to re-route the existing topic going on right now, but can someone PLEASE help me find paper suitable for 3.5?
