flying kabutomushi / shuki kato

hi,

I´ve tried to fold kato´s kabutomushi out of the 21st origami tanteidan convention - but because of the big paper and therefore some inaccuracies I had to stop at step 14, because the folds were not in a right angle any more

instead I used this paper afterwards to fold komatsu´s tiger

does anyone have the exact ratio of the fold of step 9 (= the crease on the left of step 10) ?
having this crease, it should be easier to add the following creases.

i am in the middle of this model now. anyone who wants to try: do yourself a favor, and use an embossing pen (what nicolas terry calls "magic precreasing tool," you can get one at any art/craft store) during the extensive precreasing process.

more specifically, steps 1-9 is dividing the square into 11ths so you can then divide it into 22nds

thanks ... now I see it, that it is 11ths ... so logically the horizontal creases are also 11ths or 22nds, since they are using the intersections, correct?

I think I´m going to use a "magic precreasing ruler" also

At first I´ve tried with a square of 100 cm x 100 cm, but I think, I´ll try with 70 cm x 70 cm; what size are you using?

lol, 50 cm x 50 cm, because i am using double tissue and that is the largest. i am way too far from the end to tell you if that's too small. i think that if you are going to use a larger square and you want to measure the references, it's easier to use multiples of 11 (66 cm x 66 cm, 77 cm x 77 cm, etc., etc.).

50cm worked fine got me. I don't think it would actually be any easier to measure and mark for references - your just using such a big sheet its hard to fold accurately. I would recommend less than 65 cm as long as your paper is reasonably thin.

i agree that dividing the paper into 11ths by measuring references is not otherwise worthwhile on its own, unless you make it easy for yourself by using a multiple of 11. for instance, with a 50 cm sheet, it's a waste of time, and you're better off finding the references as kato suggests.

Agreed. I guess its best to just do whatever's easiest/most accurate.

I do have some 70cm x 200cm wrapping-paper, so producing a 66cm-square would be the best.

precreasing done - lets start folding ...

well, my progress so far:

- left some important time at step 74
- lost some hours at step 91 and 93 ... discovering after these both steps, that my folds were not in the correct ratio
- fortunately I only had to perform a spread-sink (I think it was one ) to get a result like in the diagram of step 94
- 105 was easier for me performing it 5 times ...
- "liked" step 129 (repeat steps 94 - 128)
- I thing I did not perform everything correctly at the steps 131 - 164
- especially liked step 165 (repeat 138-164)

but:

I´m struggling with performing 182 - 190 ...
- in 183 it says that I have to pleat and repeat it behind - do I have to pleat the top pleats also (= pleating all the paper) ?
- it is the same with 185 ?
- I can perform some folds to receive the "basis" of diagram 192, but I can´t arrange the flaps in the middle, to receive the "full" 192. I have tried for several hours right now, trying different folds/arrangements, but nothing seems to work ;-(

do you have any hints ?

I found zavala´s origami tutorials for several models already some days ago - and yesterday I found his kabutomushi, too
In fact I´m downloading them right now.
