The 64 Piece Chessboard

Hi, everyone! I'm new. My name is Rochelle, and I'm a college freshman. I've just recently gotten back into origami, and this time, I'm actually learning all about it, not just how to fold a crane or a frog or what have you. I'm working on a project right now - the 64 piece chessboard. The link to the diagram is here.

Being fairly new to origami, I'm having trouble with one specific fold - the "sink" that creates the slot to plug the tab into. It's at the bottom of page 2. I don't quite see how to make that triangle into a sink fold. I know how to do a sink fold on a more normal triangle, but this one is kind of X shaped at the cross section, (see a picture here) and no matter how I try, I can't get the fold to reverse into a slot.

Also, if anyone has folded this model before, can you tell me if the bottom of the box is supposed to be open? The picture on the diagram looks like it becomes a box closed on all sides, but when I fold it, it's an open box on the bottom. (see a picture here.

Yes, the chess board pieces end up open at the bottom like the one you showed.

Concerning the open sink I would suggest you practice it by sinking the tip of a waterbomb base or of a preliminary base, which is basically the same like the sink for this model.

Okay, so it's not something I'm doing //wrong//, per se, just something I need to keep working on. When I sink it, should the entire point be buried within the square? And won't that disturb the four tabs on the other side? I've gotten close, but every time I think I have it, the other side of the square comes undone.

I actually saw that, and I almost decided to do that one, but I'm looking to make a pretty big chessboard, so rather than try to hunt down a piece of paper big enough to make that model to my liking, I opted to use 150mm square pieces to make a chessboard which, I believe, will end up to be approximately 20-30 cm square.

I would like to try that one someday, though. It looks kind of fun.

Edit: I lied - that chessboard and the one I saw are different. I will take a closer look at that link and see if it's something I want to do instead. Thanks!

Edit again: You know, I think I may choose to do that model instead, now that I've actually looked at it and tried it. I may cheat a little bit and put some tape on the bottom to make it a little more sturdy and portable, but I'm amazed at how much easier that was. At first glance, I thought it was the one that's made of all one piece of paper with like, a million tiny little folds. That would have drove me crazy, but I'm glad there's a third option available now.

Once I get a little farther, I'll post and let you guys know how it's going. I'm actually creating a video out of this - I'll post some details later, once I'm sure it's actually going to work. And I'll be sure to post some pictures of the finished result. Thank you all so much!

Yeah that sink is evil, I ripped the paper like twice, but after doing it 4 times It got quite easy, I didn't open it all up I just crumplled it inward and then used a pen to flatten out the inside

I'm a little late on this but could somebody link me to the diagrams, the link is dead. It would just be interesting to see because I want to compare it to the other modular one.
