JAPC, just like I asked firstfold and Baltorigamist, are you sure you don't want to use a cryptic title during the challenge? Maybe just the fold isn't enough for the judge to get what you feel strongly about. The cryptic title might help, at least more than leaving it untitled.

Hello everybody, just a fast message from me so that you know I am alive and looking and thinking about your models!

I went through all the discussion, saw all the models and will need one or two more days to decide. I apologise for delay, but it was difficult to do anything untill now.

I guess the winner can't participate in November challenge as he/she is supposed to judge it, right? Or is there some other rule I don't know about? And can I ask somebody else to help me with choosing the winner - I have one person in mind for that who wasn't participating, but I want to be sure that's ok with you all

I understand but the goal of this piece was not to have any influence or explanation... But I guess I can give a hint with the following title: "two faces of a crease"

Hi dazda . Yes, the winner of this challenge can't participate officially in the November challenge. Now, about asking someone to help you choose the winner of this challenge, I'd say it hasn't been done before. I actually like the idea, but that's just my opinion.

I thought it might be helpful judge this model to see "Unum" being deconstructed to "E Pluribus".

So I tried to choose well and I tried to understand what the models may be saying... I've chosen 3 which were fitting the theme the best (for me) - by @firstfold, @JAPC and @NeverCeaseToCrease
This is what I can see in them - and I do look forward to hear the original hidden meanings...
@JAPC - Joao, I love your model very much! It's so expressive on its own. Are there two loves hidden in that model, not only two faces? Your love for Arches paper and love between those two? And love is emotion strong enough, strong enough to be felt strong enough about. Who knows?
@NeverCeaseToCrease - I see the gentleman holding a phone prepared to take a picture of a beautiful flower, but there is another voice telling him to stop it and instead to make the rose froze in the static picture, to smell it, touch it, feel it, to be there in the moment with the rose... Maybe wrongly interpreted, you know, I hope you tell us
@firstfold - it's impressive what you put together! I can see theatre, I can see faces hidden behind the curtain and revealed when the curtain opens, but I am not totally sure what more you wanted to express... Thank you for the video where you disassemble your multipiece, I hope it's easy to put it all together again!

And I've chosen as a winner..... let me tell you, I was strongly hesitating between first two mentioned models, but in the end, I've chosen..... "One square of Arches paper folded with emotion" by @JAPC. Congratulation!!! And thank you for all participants and some great models for this difficult topic!

I interpreted them a bit differently.

I think firstfold's model is a political piece related to what's going on currently in the US. Its provisional title made me think that (after I browsed a bit about it).

I think NeverCeaseToCrease's model is related to an idea similar to what Narcissus represents in Greek mythology: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissus_(mythology)

I see the two faces in JAPC's model but I don't get what they mean .

I thought Baltorigamist's model had to do with the killing of white seals, but I think I'm wrong first because he used blue/white paper instead of red/white and second because his provisional title is “The World is your Oyster”.

Mine was actually related to entitlement (it depicts an otter holding its oyster). It’s interesting to hear different interpretations, of course.

Yes, congrats to JAPC, that was an incredible model.

Mine was about living life through technology rather than real life. Instead of actually smelling the flower, he "smells" it through his phone by taking a picture. It seems to capture the image, but a photo is never as good as the real thing, thus the quotations around "smell." The man is dressed like the stereotypically busy businessman who does not have time to enjoy life. As a teenager, I see this all the time. People hang out over the phone rather than in person. We play esports rather than actual sports outside. We are all "smelling" the roses on this forum right now.
Anyways, that was what I had in mind when I made it. Thanks again to Gerardo for encouraging everybody to fold something this month!

E Pluribus Unum = “From Many, One”

The symbol of the shield on the Great Seal of the United States Generally is agreed to represent the Union of States in one nation. The 13 stripes and blue rectangle are a recreation of the shield that appears on the Great Seal

The acceptance of a second meaning is that this nation was also a Union of many people of diverse origins.
This Origami model attempts to highlight both meanings.

Construction –
The Models Consists of many pieces (paper rectangles) joined to form one model - therefore, “From Many, One”

The faces on the back plate of the model were equally sized rectangles printed and cut from the same sheet of paper in different skin tones and constructed to slide into a back plate fitting together.
This means that “All Faces were Created Equal” and folded by their creator “with inalienable characteristics” (so they can be viewed together) – A paraphrase of Thomas Jefferson and the Constitution of the United States. And a goal of “E Pluribus Unum”

The shield can cover and protect the faces representing equal opportunity to all under the law. However, this same shield might be seen as a wall or a filter that can in the seen as filtering or blocking access to these rights. The perception of each meaning can be tainted by political tendencies. One viewer titled my creation “Now you see it, Now you don’t” – another good title for this creation.

The Stripes in the shield are simply held in place by friction and if not handled carefully can be out of alignment. I deliberately included aligning the model to represent the fragility of any Democracy and how constant realignment is necessary for balanced viewing and smooth operation.

When first designing this model, I considered two different design and used Sketchup to draws each of these designs. The first designs emphasize how careful placement and perception is required to see what potential meaning this model represents. The second design is the kinetic model with working Blinds shown in the open and closed position. This is the design I used to plan the final folded model.

The US has always had a long way to go in meeting up to the ideals presented in our Symbols of Freedom and Equality – I am always hoping for better. I hope that more people will take a second look.
