Red-winged blackbird

There is a pond near where I live, and there are always red-winged blackbirds there, flitting in and out of the reeds echoing their musical calls throughout the day. So, I designed my first decent model, using the most efficient circle packing for seven point from a square. This model is the result of 5 prototypes, and is folded from tissue foil, utilizing a colour change for the wings.

Hey, nice work man.

Judging from pictures of the blackbird I googled, you should make the head bigger. It looks like this can easily be fixed. The beak as well, should be wider.

I´ve never seen a red-winged blackbird, but your model looks so lifelike, that I can imagine the real thing. Any chance of a crease pattern?

I especially like the second picture. The first one is a little bit blurred and on the third picture the beak looks too short and small.

JeossMayhem - yes, the head can , and will be made bigger, I will work on another version, and the beak can be made wider, I will revise this.

origami_8 - I was having camera problems, which I will try to resolve in the next few days. I am thinking about trying to make full diagrams for this model, and will be experimeting with this in the next few weeks.

Cupcake - Yup, it is tissue foil, my first try at making it. It came out good, but the rest I made sucked

I am also toying with the idea of giving it toes using a strip graft of some sort. To this end, i will post the cp for the basic base, and show you all how I am thinking of doing it, and seeing if any of you have a better idea.

Yea, tissue paper can be a pain sometimes. My parents made me make it outside because they were afraid the spray glue was harmful. Let's just say the outdoors is the worst place to make it. UGH. Not doing that again...

And yea, some talons would be a great addition. And maybe something more can be done with the tail?

The strip graft I have in mind will add some paper to the tail, as well as resulting in talons, but I need to work on making it a bit more elegant and easier to fold.

With a slightly larger head to improve proportion, I like the simplicity as is.

When you enlarge the head, I'd like to try using some of the red/black duo paper that I use for LaFosse's Cardinal....

Unfortunately, I'll have to wait for the diagrams... because I'm still CP-challenged

I'm glad you all like it

I am currently working towards a version with 4 talons, a better beak, larger head, and more detailed tail. I made a prototype to test my idea, and it works, but it only has 3 toes right now. I am going to make a better version that is easier to fold and has 4 toes. A crease pattern is coming soon

I couldn't find the glue that you suggested, but I am going to look in a lot more places. I was just too excited to make this paper, so for the time being I settled for wallpaper glue.

Well here it is. After 7 prototypes I finally have something I am pleased with. I tried to work with all of your suggestions to make it better. Hope you guys like it.

Diagrams will be coming when I figure out how to draw good ones.
