I like florist foil when I'm folding something complicated, or origamido paper when I can get my hands on it, but mostly I use foil paper. I can't seem to get more than eight inches square foil though. Does anyone know where I can get it?

The first time I fold something, I always use copy paper just to make sure I can fold all of the steps properly. Once I'm comfortable with a model, I'll try different paper.

I prefer folding MC-treated unryu but there aren't many choices of colours here in Singapore. Recently I tried back-coating 2 sheets of crepe paper and it worked well, I loved the wrinkle texture formed by the bubbles during back-coating.

Have anyone tried the handmade wrapping paper available in IKEA? It's called "ONSKA". It's of medium thickness, can hold a crease quite well, nicely coloured and textured.

I use standard printer paper for practice and experimentation. For final display pieces, I whatever I feel best suits my needs, but single-sided color or patterned origami paper is my most common medium. I have also used poster board and colored butcher paper to make some larger products.

What ratio of MC to water have u found works the best? I just got some in the mail, but I am not sure what ratio to mix it at.

hi foxglove,

I tend to use very thick MC solution to surface size my unryu paper
my brand of MC is Metylan Normal, a MC to water ratio of 1:10 by volume works best for me. After mixing, I wait about a few hours until the solution becomes very thick. Haven't experimented with other brands

Hm, tissue foil sounds interesting, but I don't have the space/time/money for it at the moment. I live in a tiny student accomodation room, not to mention if I get anything on the surfaces I end up paying for it.

I usually use shop bought origami squares or copy paper. It can get a bit bulky, but I've managed to fold some Satoshi Kamiya, Lang, etc, from it, so I think the negative aspects are sometimes overexagerrated. Plus, I think the essence of origami's charm for me is being able to create something from a simple piece of paper.

What would you guys recommend as an affordable alternative to tissue foil? I've been putting off the ancient dragon because I know that with normal paper unless I get A1 or something equally silly the bulk will ruin the aesthetics (right?).

I'll probably try anyway though. :D

Its not incredible, but if you are looking for cheap, fairly good paper(better than kami) you can buy foil wrapping paper or get floral paper from a local floral shop.

I usually use store-bought origami paper (I'm rather lazy, I like my squares pre-cut) but whenever I fold something rather complex, I use wrapping paper; it's cheap, it can make big squares, and it's easy to find. I also occasionally use tissue foil, I like how you can mold it any way you want.

Need some suggestions..

It's really hard to find origami papers in here (besides the common 15x15 cm or smaller origami papers), so I usually use non origami papers that always gave me problems like too thick, tear easily etc.
Well basically, I never use good paper for folding.

I have a view wrapping papers right now. The problem with the paper is when I fold it and open the folding, it doesn't show clear crease mark.
So it's really hard when I have to make references or precreasing.

When I fold the paper one way and open the folding and then try fold it the opposite way, it always fold off from the crease mark made with the 1st folding.
(I hope I explain this clear enough to understand... I'm getting all confused myself reading my own sentence )

How can I treat this kind of paper into "submission"?

Thanks... I'm really desperate for good papers.

I am assuming that you aren't from the US, and mean 15 cm ... like the rest of the world :-)

Try: http://www.sasugabooks.com/advanced_sea ... igami+foil
(if that doesn't come through, try sasugabooks.com and search for origami foil)

http://www.aitoh.com/origami_prod.html

http://kimscrane.com/ email them for details...

http://www.kidstoyo.co.jp

http://www.origamicorner.com/origamipaper.html

http://www.origamido.com for specialty paper - call or email

Also, both Amazon and ebay have origami paper. Search for origami foil

Hope that helps,
