Linking Rings?

Post by houdini29 »

Can anyone tell me how to make 2 interlinking paper rings, preferably starting from one piece of paper or card please? Is it even possible?

the easiest way to fold this is simple pleatfolding. just simple pleatfold a square and form the four created flaps into rings. I just tried out and within a minute I had two interlinking rings.
maybe you should tell us about your folding experiences?!

Check out Jeremy Shafer's book "Origami to astonish and amuse". It even has 8 interlocking rings from a single uncut square!

Thankyou both for very quick replies. Very interesting - Amazon shows some of the pages from Shafers Book inc the 8 rings.

i did not explain my problem clearly. I want to create 2 permanently interlinked rings [or rectangles] which lie flat on the table. Imagine 2 postcards with the centres torn out, but linked together. Can that be done?

My experience is zero, but I am more interested in the seemingly impossible, rather than the very clever animals etc, in which others specialize.

Well, if you want 2 completely separate rings from 1 square...you are out of luck. It is, unfortunately, impossible to divide a single piece of paper into 2 parts with only folding.

No cutting or tearing allowed? That is my first lesson in Origami then.

Hi! I found this linking ring diagram by Akira Kawamura on his website.

Jeremy Shaffer has a great method for closing the rings.

It can be found at the "Start of David" at this page:
Symbols and Signs and Stunning Designs by Jeremy Shaffer
look especially at step 6 and from step 14.

He uses the same connection for his model: Two Permanently interlocking tings
