Help with Fuse "Gift Boxes"

Post by bethnor »

I have a copy of Tomoko Fuse's "Gift Boxes" (I think) in Korean, and I have a question about the paper sizes.

In particular, I want to try my hand at some of the hexagon boxes, the tops of which I believe are diagrammed on pgs. 72-80. I think the tops call for A4 size paper but I am not sure.

The bottoms, I believe, are diagrammed on pgs. 81-83. There is something about A4 size paper and 1/4 in the instructions, but the actual picture is showing an extra 1-2 mm of paper on it(?)--so, I guess I'm wondering if she wants an A4 + an extra 1-2mm? Is it an A4 that is 1/4 the size you used to fold the top, but an extra 1-2 mm? For the second bottom, is it just 1/2 an A4?

Any help is greatly appreciated. I have a horde of 6" kami I want to use up...

if i remember correctly, you're meant to use the same paper size for the top and bottom pieces. because of the way it's folded, the top fits nicely over the bottom.

i haven't made a fuse hexagon box in a couple of months so feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

you could always just try to make one, and see what works, anyway...

Hi bethnor,

I don' have this book on hand, but i have folded quite a few boxes

The lid and box modules are made from the same size...which means not to use a whole A4 paper but that proportion (or else you will end up with a giant box  ).

So to make the lid, use an A4 paper cut into quarters, you will need 6 pieces in total(so you will actually be using 1.5 A4sheets to get 6 pieces).

For the box (bottom), cut 1-2mm from the A4 paper (whole sheet) and then make quarters. That way, when all units are folded, the lid rests well on the box.

If you want to use your collection of 6" kami to fold that hexagon box, convert into the A4 proportion by this method...but you will have to do it for all the required number of units!!!

Try to make one and post pics.

thanks for the help, everyone. unfortunately, my proportions for the bottom just aren't turning out right.

to break down what i am doing:

i made an A4 sheet from a piece of 9.75" kami, and divided it into four A4 sheets. used 1.5 sheets to make the top of the box. then i took a 9.75" piece of kami, shaved 2 mm off the longer side, and then divided the remainder into A4 ratio paper (as opposed to 4ths along the longer or shorter sides). the results for the bottom is that the length doesn't come out right and so just doesn't look like the diagram. incidentally, it is still possible to fold the bottom of the box using these pieces, it's just that the box would come out very shallow (i.e., just enough for the top to sit on and that's it). what am i doing wrong?

A) I suggest you make the A4 ratio paper first and then shave the 2-3mm. Now make quarter of it. This little step makes a difference in the size of the paper!

B) And about increasing the depth of the box, Tomoko Fuse suggests on increasing the longer side of the paper by 2 inches. To do this, follow the next two steps :)

C) Use any paper....even newspaper or old magazine..... Cut a 9.75" square, turn it into A4 ratio paper, shave off the 2-3mm, cut into quarters.

D) Now use one quarter, place it on a cardboard or any thick paper, mark the outline. Increase the longer side by 2". Cut out the rectangle and now you have made a template! Label it and use it.

E) Use this cardboard template and trace the outline on your original kami paper and follow the steps to fold the box exactly as earlier and ta-da....you have a deeper box!

I may have explained this in too much detail...but i hope its not confusing.

Best of Luck
