About Mark Leonard's spider

Hi, can somebody please explain to me how to fold his spider [img]http://www.origami.art.pl/gfx/linki/d_spider3_th.gif[/img]
I am having difficulty with step 15 and step 19 : http://www.origami.34sp.com/spider%20diags2.htm
On step 15, when you swivel the layer, does it go between the 2 layers in the pocket or does it sink into the model?
I might be making a mistake, which leads up to step 19, where the sink might be incorrect, so please reply and help me. thnx

Neither

The swivel just brings the tip down, but it does not sink it neither it hides it between the layers.

It is more difficult to explain that it is actually to do. Play around with it and try to bring it down in an elegant way and you'll make it.

I once asked Mark about this model and he said that for it to work, it has to be folded with the thinnest paper you can find, i.e. tissue, not tissue foil, just tissue.

i still stuck n confused on step 15

I will try to explan this in a better way.

Starting point:


Then bring the thick central point up allowing that the point on the left hand side move with it

Align the flap that started at the left hand side with the rest of the model

Bring down the large flap to cover the small one (the one that started on the left hand side)

I'm still confused! I thought the top point valley folds down while the bottom portion is mountain folded, could you please post pix of the folding sequence for this step.

Just follow my previous pictures and you will find that the valley and mountain assignations are correct.

Pull the center flap up allowing that the thin flap on the left hand side move. Align that thin flap with the model (that will make the mountain fold). Bring down the center flap (this will do the valley fold)

by the way, does line paper from notebooks work well when doing origami? (especially with insects)

So $Bill, did you complete the model? Was the video useful?

Common paper is not usually good for insects since legs become too thick and impossible to shape.

I haven't yet completed it, but yes, the video and pics were very useful and now I see what I did wrong. See, the problem I come across when studying diagrams is that sometimes they are not always clear, and sometimes they tell you to fold something the way the picture is, but the fold is entirely different, as in step 15 of the spider. I'll let you know when the model is finished, hoping to show pics of the results. Thnx!

You are right about some diagrams, they tell you to do something but they show you something else instead.

I have no idea whose model that is or if there are diagrams for it

One more question, what do I do in step 19? of these-diagrams

I am on a business trip without access to paper and time until next week, but I think it is a sink that involves opening the layers of the model to accommodate what you sink. Just keep trying or wait until I come back or someone else helps you.

that is awesome but i too am stuck on 19, i think i have the wrong flap, if you can tell me if the flap i'm folding in, is from the raw edge fold?

this is what i have so far, if you could tell me if i start step 19 from A or B i think i can figure it out.



BTW the paper i used is practice paper
