I just finished drawing the CP for my Phoenix using Cadstd. The only problem is that I can't change the format so I can't upload it. Does anyone know how? If nobody answers me, then you won't get to see it. MUAHAHAHAHA!!!

Hm, I haven't ever used Cadstd, but maybe if you send me the file I can convert it for you (probably it is compatible with one of the programs I own).

That sounds like a lot of trouble...I think I'll just wait for someone who uses CadStd to read this thread and help me. That's the kind of lazy attitude that helped me stumble through life.

Angrydemon, I use a CAD program as well. You can email me the file and I can convert it to Pdf. for you.
Otherwise you will need a Pdf. writer (downloadable from the internet, ie CutePDF). When you have a pdf writer installed, you go to "print" and in stead of choosing your printer as the location to send the picture to, choose the pdf writer (eg CutePdf). The writer will then automatically save your file as a pdf format, which you can then use on flickr or this forum or wherever.
Hope this all makes sence. Thats the way i convert my CAD files, and you can see examples of the quality of some diagrams on my flickr site.
Good luck,
Quentin

I am assuming you have the full version since you called it tjust CadStd, but just in case-I downloaded CadStd lite, which lacks some features of the full CadStd (but is also free :P ). The full version can export files so you can upload them online, but the lite version cannot.

Thanks for your help, Quentin! I downloaded Pdf. writer and it works. So here's the cp for my Phoenix.

Just so you know, this is a 48 by 48 grid. If you even DARE to put this up on your website and claim that YOU drew it, I will hunt you down and kill you in your sleep. Until then, happy folding!

Neat design. You have a very good arrangement of flaps, which was the biggest struggle for me when I designed my phoenix. Your CP looks pretty nice, but there are some creases missing. It would be clearer if you included the hinge creases (the creases that outline a flap). Otherwise, especially with box-pleating, it gets hard to find out where a flap ends and a river begins, so to speak. I tend to include all of the hinge creases to show where the flaps are (even though the resulting CP will technically not fold flat), but some people show only the hinge creases needed to fold flat. It is neat to see your phoenix CP, and I look forward to seeing more of your designs!

Sorry Jonnycakes, I have absolutely no idea what the heck you're talking about! What are hinge creases?

Hinge creases. Okay, grab a scrap of paper, and fold a rabbit ear with one ot the corners. That little flap can be folded either up or down. If you fold it up, you will form a 4th crease, on the "top" side of the rabbit ear. If you fold it down, that crease will be "below". These are hinge creases, named so because like a door, the flap can easily be swung both ways.

Oh, now I understand. I'll include those in my next cp if I really fell like it. The flap arrangement for this model is very simple. A three-year old could probably figure it out.

Anyway, here's my latest model.

This is just my Bahamut with some minor design changes. Folded from one uncut square of black tissue foil.

Haha sorry about that. Sometimes I get carried away and make absolutely no sense. I can't even use the excuse that it was late at night. Actually, I think I was getting in over my head trying to explain something like that in such a short amount of space.

Let me try to reword the parts that haven't been explained already by others:
Hinge creases are not necessary to understand a CP, but it can help the viewer to see the flap arrangement if you add them in. If you want to draw your CP so that it can be folded flat from the creases shown, you have to draw hinge creases, too. Toshikazu Kawasaki presents some basic rules that a CP must satisfy to fold flat: all crease intersections (points where several creases meet) must have an even number of creases coming together, and the difference between mountain and valley folds at a crease intersection must equal 2. For example, if 4 creases meet at a crease intersection, then with 3 mountain folds and 1 valley fold, that crease intersection would fold flat (3 mountain-1 valley=2). An intersection with only 3 creases would not, no matter what arrangement of valley and mountain folds it used.

As in the case with the rabbit ear that origamimasterjared explained, some hinge creases will not be used when you fold a CP. With the rabbit ear, for example, only 1 hinge crease is needed to fold the rabbit ear flat, while there are 3 possible hinge creases in the rabbit ear.

You need to be careful which hinge creases to add in if you want your CP to fold flat exactly how it is, but I personally add most or all of the hinge creases to my CPs. Hinge creases form the outlines of flaps (look back to the rabbit ear example) and clearly show where each flap lies. I think a CP that uses more hinge creases than necessary to fold flat can be clearer than one that shows less hinge creases(or none).

I tried to be as clear as possible, but this was a rather long-winded response. I find myself using a lot of mathematical language, and that is probably because I learned all of this stuff from reading Lang's Origami Design Secrets. I suppose I ended up giving a little mini-lesson on CPs  . Good luck with your CP-drawing (and hopefully understanding my post :P ).

I took new photos of my Bahamut, this time with a cool background and proper lighting! You do not want to know what kind of hell I had to go through to take these "perfect" photos. I deleted all the photos in my previous post and switched them with the new ones.
