How have you come to Origami

Hi! I started doing origami when i was about 6. it was my grandmother who taught me. My first origami was a waterbomb model which was taught by grandmother. I was inspired by power of origami that i continue searching for new origami models to fold.

heys..well I'm also new here..and this is my first year in origami ..i think its so interesting and fun xD!!
my sister study in UAE so when she came to visit us back in Kuwait...she brought that origami book well it was for children but it attracted my attention so then i started doing origami from that book ^_^

Wow! From waterbomb to kawasaki... that's a huge leap.

Me, my dad bought me this simple origami booklet that had paper stuck in a mini pocket. After that, the addiction was slow to start. But then I encountered Robert Harbin's Origami 3. There was no looking back from that point.

Actually, I jumped from an extremely simple boat ( 5 steps, I think ) ( from http://www.origami.com ) to the kawasaki rose. I've also taught several people how to fold this rose, even though they had never folded anything in their entire life. The angled kawasaki rose is rather hard, but the old one is relatively easy.

I liked Origami from the moment I found origami.com. Never knew it was possible to create anything else than traditional models using a single uncut square before then. 90% of the books on the subject of Origami contain traditional models, or kirigami models ( - yet the book is still called "simple origami" or whatever.. ). Soon ( 2 months, that is ) after I folded my first model I bought Works of Satoshi Kamiya, but due to the lack of large paper I cannot really complete most of the models. I tried to fold his Pegasus yesterday, for example, and even though it wasn't that hard, I couldn't finish it using 20cm kami. That's why I'm not really an 'active' origamist, though I occasionally find some time to fold something. It still is my favorite hobby, next to playing the Piano and video games.

Use another book than Works of Satoshi Kamiya. It is complex book with very limited number of models. Use for example Origami Omnibus by master Kasahara with hundreds of models which you really injoy and will not be frustrated after several hours of folding of complex model from small paper - you earn big crumple and will trash it.

Actually, it isn't the complexity that is bothering me. I understand how to fold the models, I just don't have the right paper for it.

For example, I got hold of some 70x70cm paper, so I decided to try to fold the Ancient Dragon. However, the paper ended up being so thick that I couldn't really do anything with it. The diagrams were very clear though, so that wasn't really the problem.

Also, I got The Complete Book of Origami by Robert Lang, but I hate it. There are too many models that aren't folded from a square, but from traingles or rectangles ( with silly proportions ).

I'm not really frustrated either - even though I cannot finish te model I still improve my folding technique and learn something from it.

Try using tissue foil or double tissue. You have to make it yourself but it's well worth the effort. Not only are they thin enough, but also very strong. That doesn't mean you should use anything smaller than 50 cm though

You can also buy over-priced origami paper online if you want. It's your choice.

I understand (and know) that diagram for example for ancient dragon is relatively easy and clear. But it is normal that you are not happy after repetitive long work with bad result. And your enthusiasm goes down. I fold simplier model with more pleasure, because:
A) it is fast and my son is still interested by folding and waiting on result
B) it never mind if my son crumple and/or rip the model
C) result is usually more than satisfactory
D) such model usually need much less repetitions to learn how to fold it properly
E) I fold many model in the same time - more models = more joy - and they can interact, for example play theatre (for my son)

You can read, that my origami focus is a little bit shifted...

wow..that same goes to me...waterbomb..crane..all these was my first time paper folding during child but i don't know is called as 'ORIGAMI' !

I first discovered origami as a child, there was a demonstration at a crafts fair, every few years I get the urge to try it, finally a few weeks ago I decided to give it a go, and now I'm hooked
