Obtaining Polygons From a Square

Post by Oruhito »

Hi all,

As a tessellation folder, I was thinking how do you obtain the largest hexagon possible from a square. I usually precrease first, and then cut out a hexagon (usually reducing the size of the original square a lot). I was wondering if anyone knew any folding sequences to get the biggest size hexagon from a square. Maybe links to templates? Thanks for your help

Kasahara Kunihiko shows procedures to make polygons from the square in his book The art and wonder of origami. You fold square to some shape and then cut-off its part. After unfolding you have desirable polygon. But I am not sure, if you make maximal polygons by Kasahara's methods.

that sounds great! Even though it may not be the maximum size I'd still be interested in how it's done. I'm afraid I don't have that book though. Thank your help :D

In the "Diagramme"-section of this site is a simple way to get a hexagon from a square, I don't know how effective it is though: http://www.origami-online.de
