I am sure we all thought we seen the last of this problem.

Would it be possible for anybody to display a colored photo of the finished peacock.

I have reached the end of the project and I think I got it done correctly, however, it looks funny. So, I don't know if I did it correctly.

The book has photos of the peacock, however, they are small, in black and white, and are done on printed paper, so the details do not show up that good. Now, my eyesight isn't bad, but it isn't as good as it use to be.

A finished peacock on just plain colored paper would help a lot. In fact you can do it on just plain white printer paper. Basically, I need to know if I got the tail feathers done correctly.

I realize that film cost money, so if this is just a costly use of resources and is a request that is not in the budget, I will understand. Believe me when I say, "Few people will understand that as well as I do."

origami_8,

That is perfect! :D That helps a lot.

I see that I did make a few tiny mistakes; however, to my surprise they were not in the areas that I thought they would be. Now, I know what the final goal should be. Thank you very much for your picture. :D

Also, I love your peacock. Were did you get that paper? :-k

Well... I got nothing. However, I have gotten further than I have been before; but, there are two steps I am having problems with. So, I need to ask a questions to see if I am interpreting it correctly.

On steps 6 and 7 am I suppose to fold the tail feathers back, before I pocket fold them? If so, do I fold back each layer (i.e. flap), or do I just fold certain layers while leaving others as they are? :?

In step 6 you outside-reverse fold the head, then you valley fold the front and back layer of the tail feathers as shown.
Step 7 shows an inside-reverse fold of the second layer from each side. In step 8 follows the same with the middle layer (and don´t forget to outside-reverse fold the head).
To make the model look more beautiful, I insertet a second inside-reverse fold in the opposite direction to each layer, this is not shown in the diagrams.

I´m on holliday at a friend, so it´s not my paper. But my friend told me that he bought it very cheap in large rolls at some kind of cent-shop.

Geez! What a headache this bird is. The diagram is really very simple, but the paper just doesn't want to cooperate with this folding method.

Well, believe it or not. I have now done this bird. It is a little crooked and just a tiny bit warped, however, they are imperfections that I can iron out with practice.

I would like to ask you a question. How do you get the tail feathers folded when you stick to the diagram in the book?

The book really doesn't give any details, and it does not work the same as a pocket fold. In the end the edges at the top are slightly torn. So, basicly I invented my own move to get the same end result. I asked the question because I thought that there was a right way and a wrong way to get to the end result. Maybe the move I invented is the wrong way and that is why the edges are torn. :-k

Well, I just thank you all so very much for that. I really learn much better by demonstration, and a video does me a world of good. I am touched that you all went to that much trouble for me. :D

Christian,

You are really on to something with that idea. I am sure there are a lot of origami fans who have given up on some folds that they just could not figure out. I am sure I am not the only person out there that would benefit from that idea. Just think about it. An video origami website, were you have videos of folds that are commonly difficult to figure out.

Unfortunately, I was unable to view the video. I got an error code (C00D109B) that said I didn't have the codecs needed to view this video. After a lot of searching I found a download site for additional codecs, however, this did not solve the problem. When ever I hit play, I notice a little window at the bottom of the player and it flashed the words download error when trying to obtain the codecs it needs to view the video. I have done all that I know how to do to solve this problem. However, it was still a great idea. :D

origami_8,
What is a pocket fold?
What?! Do you mean to tell me that you have the exact same book, by the exact same author, and it is using different origami terminology than what my book does?

WOW! That really shocks me. I didn't know they did that. I just assumed that books were the same no matter what part of the world you bought them.

Well, a pocket fold in my version of the book, is what they are calling an inside-reverse fold in your version of the book.

I really wish that origami terminology was more standard. It is really very flexible and different authors use different terminology. I just recently bought an origami CD, and they are using terminology that I am not familiar with. So, needless to say I was totally lost and could not use what I just bought.Image

Most of the folds have fairly standard terminologies. Those that don't are usually simple folds, which are straightforward enough to work out regardless of how they're called; or complicated ones, in which case it doesn't matter what it's called.

So, names like book folds, cupboard folds, ice cream cone folds, etc, can be tossed aside and replaced with the standard "valley/mountain fold to X". Complicated ones like the Lang-closed-triple-backflip-unsink maneuver, can be reduced to "unfold and collapse along the creases shown".

As wolf said, many of the common folds have standard names. One other problem that you run into is that standard terms don't translate well literally. If you have an origami book that was originally published in another language, and if the translator is not familiar with origami terms, you end up with literal translations of origami terms that don't seem to make much sense. I'm guessing that's where your "pocket fold" comes from.

you can either use the "VLC Media Player" for playing that movie (download it from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ ) or install the K-Lite Codec Pack, which includes the DivX Pro Codec ( http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_L ... c_Pack.htm ).
I would suggest to use the VLC Media Player, because it doesn't need any installed codecs. it has them all on-board. and it even plays broken movies inside of packed files or images (such as ISO) :) it's simply the best player around... and best of all: It's completely free and availabla for most systems (like Windows, Linux, BeOS and MAC) 8)

Ooops! Like I said before I´m on holliday, so I don´t have my books with me. I folded the peacock by heart and didn´t see the terminology. My mistake, sorry!

I would also wish that there would be a standardized Origami-terminology. A short time ago I postet this in another topic ( http://snkhan.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.ph ... d&start=15 ) but it seems to me there is too less interest in siting down and making it that it will ever be realized :(

Finally! I get it. Thank you all so very much. I see what I was doing wrong now. I understood the directions, but I was trying to make the pocket fold while it was still folded. So, I kept damaging the bird. Now, I am finally able to create that peacock. What a relief! I had so much trouble getting this right, and to think I bought Robert Lang's Origami Design Secrects. How stupid! I ran home with that book saying, "Yeah! I'm going to fold that goldfish!"

Then I opened the book and saw the diagram for it and said, "WOW! Not in this lifetime."

wolf,

True. However, when you are just starting out at this for the first time. It is very confusing. :?

Joseph Wu,
I'm guessing that's where your "pocket fold" comes from.
I don't know. I have several books, and some use the word pocket fold and others use the word inside-reverse fold. I don't get too confused with that because I have illustrations to go on. So, I edit the book in my head. Meaning, if the instructions say inside-reverse fold, but I'm more familiar with the term pocet fold then I will just call it that and never go on the books written terminology.

TheRealChris,

Hey, thanks for that link. I downloaded the player and was able to play the file. I really like that player. The film footage was a bit too dark, so when the paper was turned over to the darker side I could not see what was being done. However, the VLC Media Player allowed me to adjust the settings of the film. So, I was able to make it a lot brighter so I could see. That player was really worth the download. :D

origami_8,

I read your idea on creating a website that had standard universal origami terminology. I really liked the idea. That along with video files of some of the more simple origami folds. I realize it can't be complexed folds, like the Kawasaki Rose, or the file size would be too large; but I can't be the only one out there who can get stuck with some of these folds. I think video files of demonstration would be great, and add the link that Christian gave, so people could play it on something that works right.
