Origami Weekly - a new origami calendar

Hi Folks,

*sigh*

Another year, another sweet little origami page-a-day calendar, another set of hopelessly simple models*...

And hence, more hours spent trying to modify such super-simple models so your friends won't think you've gone soft.

Are you tired yet? Then look sharp and get out those folding papers-- there's something new on the horizon. I'm pleased to introduce the Origami Weekly diagram calendar. Yes, that's right-- while you were busy sleeping off the hangover from New Year's Eve, Andrew and I were designing and diagramming like crazy, and sleeping off the hangover. And so today we present the first installment, a double post, and for the rest of the year we'll continue to publish one new, original diagram every week. We'll release them each Monday from now 'til 2010, and we hope you'll fold along!

Why, you say? Short answer: we've grown tired of folding the same "classic" models, and thought we'd spice it up a bit. Long answer: we're looking for exposure, not only for ourselves, but also for the other folders that we'll be featuring. We're trying to freshen up the world of the advanced origami folder, while at the same time giving us a challenge and some extra experience. There is a lot of untapped talent in the amateur origami world, and it's about time someone took notice!

This week's edition features Andrew Hudson's Green Tree Python and Jared Needle's Snowflake.

I haven't been doing origami for a while because I don't know what to fold, but now I can fold something every week!

Is this going to be a pattern? Like diagram and crease pattern?

Maybe. We haven't entirely sussed that out yet.

We also intend to feature other artists.

Let me also say how I've been astonished by reading your snowflake explanation.
I'm glad (and a little proud

) to have been an inspiration for you

One of my good proposal for this new year has been to make out more diagrams (with a final target of my first publication, I hope) and your good work and example will be an inspiration too for me.

Wow! What great news! I too received one of those 1 a day origami calendars this holiday season

. But now I can look forward to folding a new model every Monday

. The folding community and I are very grateful for your obvious effort and altruism. As paperfolders, we know exactly how difficult and painstaking it is to design original models and go the extra step by diagramming them. What an awesome idea that will undoubtedly brighten the next year for everyone here.

Fantastic models-and I can, as well, relate to getting an origami calender every year (my grandma seems to think I like them and I don't have the heart to tell her otherwise

). This will be something to look forward to-I wish you the best of luck in designing and diagramming for this ambitious project!

Jared/Andrew - the Weekly calendar is a fantastic idea. Lots of folks appear to see different ways to benefit from you generosity and fun. And, the first models look accessible to a wide audience without being simple or too challenging.

I must say, you guys will have to do well to keep up with the quality of the first models! Best origami snowflake, and also best square-paper snake I know of!

insaneorigami -- Yes, we intend to keep this up all year; and I think we're obsessive/prolific enough to pull it off! And I expect the quality of the models won't go down too much, we'll be supplementing our own work with the diagrams of other folders, to give us more time to deliver finished, fully polished work.

HankSimon -- We'll try to keep the diagrams at a manageable level, but the creasepatterns should provide more of a challenge for the advanced folder.

Mars -- After some discussion, we've decided to stick to the form of one diagram and one creasepattern per week. so yes!
