Shumakov - Orchid Phalaenopsis

Post by danaelask »

Hello everyone, greetings from Greece!
I'm new to this forum so I hope this topic doesn't already exist (although a quick search revealed nothing).
I am stuck at step 32 of the orchid phalaenopsis diagram from Yuri & Katrin's Shumakov book "Oribana Delight". I obviously don't fold the model correctly. My result is completely different than the one shown.
Can anyone help please?Thank you in advance.

Can you please post a link or what book the diagrams are in? It would help us a lot with helping you.

right, the diagram is in Yuri & Katrin's Shumakov book "Oribana Delight" which is found here:

Step 32 is just to mountain fold the model in half and turn it upside down afterwards.

yes and so I did...but it doesn't look anything like the picture shown.I end up with six petals than five as expected...Or should I fold down one petal and join it with the stem...?But then again, this is not clearly stated in the instructions...

Have you done step 21?

(For further record so I don't need to search again: page 41-44)

You don't make a line in step 21, you fold the flap up and leave it there. This way one flap gets locked up with the stem and isn't there as single flap any more when you come to step 32, therefore you end up with 5 flaps instead of 6.

Not illegal just not 'pure' origami. If you're an origami purist it is kind of like cheating because the model is not longer made from one uncut piece.

You could begin with a hexagon as well, or just fold a hexagon from a square. The way they do it in those diagrams is just the "simple" approach, also every folder decides for his own what he allows himself and what not. There is no general "forbidden", there is just what you allow yourself and what not.
