Folding Australia 2009

Post by spiritofcat »

I thought there wasn't going to be an Australian Origami con this year, but it looks like I was wrong.
I just got an email from the papercrane.org mailing list with all the details about Folding Australia 2009!
Folding Australia 2009

Dates: 26th - 27th September 2009.
Location: Sol Green Community Centre
Corner Coventry and Montague Streets, South Melbourne.

This years origami convention is part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival, the event is ticketed through the Fringe Festival.

Tickets go on sale September 1st 2009 at midday.

Tickets can be purchased by phone on (03) 9660 9666 or on the internet at www.melbournefringe.com.au.

Ticket prices

One day passes
Adult $28
Child/Concession $18

Two day passes
Adult $48
Child/concession $28

Our program
The program will feature master classes from Australia's leading origami experts. The focus of the master classes will be on origami as an art form, and go beyond merely teaching the mechanics of sequence folding; developing expression through paper choice, and folding technique - including hard, soft, and wet folding. We hope to capture this spirit across the program. Our program will also include introductory and intermediate level classes. If you wish to present a class during weekend, please contact us at info@papercrane.org and let us know the model and on which day you would like to teach.

Publication
We are planning a smaller publication to go along with this years convention, we will be announcing more information about this shortly, so get your diagrams in order.

What's new this at 2009
This years convention has some points of difference between previous years. Most notably, we have lowered the price (a monetary squash fold?), primarily because we have not invited an international guest.

Our decision was to develop origami in our local community. We aim to encourage young folders to start folding and to also start designing. To assist with the long term development of this initiative we sought funding from the City of Port Phillip as part of their community arts development program. Luckily, our grant proposal was successful, and our grant funding will be presented by the Mayor at the St Kilda town hall at 6.30pm on the 23rd July. (I apologise in advance that its by invitation only, though I'd love to invite you all).

We believe in developing the culture of origami in Australia for the long term. Our job is to inspire the young designers and foster their talents. Along with our usual program of teaching and inspiring the adults as well, of course!

We hope to see you at Folding Australia 2009.
I'm excited that it is on. I've never been to an Origami con before. I'll be going for sure.

That's how I felt when I didn't think this one was going to be on this year.
It was on in 2003, 2005 and 2007, but I couldn't find any info about a 2009 one until this email.

Maybe you should start one.
If not a full con you could at least have a little get together with the other folders in your country.

Are there conventions in neighboring countries? Depending on your country's size (and laws), it might not be too much trouble to go across the border for one.

I could try, if I was older, now I'm only 13.

The closest one's at a Vietnam or Thailand.

Thought I'd dig this topic back up since I've just arrived home from the convention.

First origami con I've ever been to, so it was pretty exciting.
Great to be in the company of so many other folders.
It was really good to meet the people from the Melbourne Origami group and put faces to the names.

Living in Sydney, it was a long drive to and from Melbourne for it, but well worth it in my opinion.
I also met a couple of other Sydney folders and exchanged email addresses, so hopefully we can start our own monthly meetings locally.

I'll post photos soon. Just have to get them out of my phone and uploaded.

My first con too, so it was pretty cool. It wasn't such a long driv for me though, only about 20 minutes  .

It was good to meet you spiritofcat, I loved that tiny Frill-Necked Lizard!

It was kinda a downsized convention seeing as Matt Gardiner and his wife My Trinh (the organisers of the convention) had a couple of young 'uns to raise, and were working on the website design for my dad's buisiness :P

There were some good models being taught, including Gen Hagiwara's Frill-Necked Lizard and Vincent Floderer's Mushroom, as well as advice on wetfolding techniques.

I'll post photos too, although usually I don't post models that are not my design.

Photos are up.
You can see them in a set on my Flickr.
I may go back and edit the titles and descriptions but at least the photos are there to see now.
