I wanted to elaborate on why I was having trouble; this is the crease pattern for the Deco Star I am trying to make (below). It is my first time making origami from a crease pattern rather than a diagram and since the diagram seems to indicate different kinds of folds (mountain, valley) with standard types of dashed or dotted lines I am having a little trouble folding it. I got to step 3 and tried folding a few different ways but none of them actually seemed to work. It looks like you fold a diagonal from each corner of the center square to the midpoint of the center crease line but I was just at a loss on why that would make the paper somewhat curved in the next step.

I feel kind of dumb because I feel like this is a really simple origami piece that I could fold easily with a diagram, but I guess I would rather feel dumb and ask questions and try to understand how CPs work on a simple model than on something really complex.
I read the existing tutorials on how to fold the porcupine CP model but since most of the CPs I see are incredibly complex, I am having trouble seeing the forest for the origami trees, as it were, maybe because the one I am trying to use is so simple!
