Grid for Crease Pattern

Post by hobbestheprince »

Anyone know how to make a 12x12 grid? I am trying to do the following crease pattern:

I have looked everywhere and can't seem to figure out how to get a 12x12 grid.

Fold in thirds first, then fold each third into fourths, and you will have twelfths

You can use the Haga´s theorem

Another method is to fold a 16x16 grid and cut out 4 rows and 4 columns. However, it's a waste of Paper. ;)

I have heard of Haga's theorem ... I will have to check that out. I wasn't sure if it applied to a 12x12 grid. I'm a little new to CP's and seeing things like folding into thirds and fourths is a little confusing, considering I have to have alternating mountain/valley folds. There's only a few tutorials on CP's out there, and not many of them talk about the grid's when it comes to box-pleating.

You may want to check out Gerwin Sturm's tutorial on boxpleating then: http://www.origamiaustria.at/articles.php?lang=2#a4
Part 2 is completely devoted to grids.

origami_8: Thanks for the link. I downloaded it and noticed it mentions 12ths. It still confuses me with the thirds and fourths, etc. I am guessing I would fold in half, then fold to that point, and go from there?

Also, does anyone think this CP is ambitious for a beginner? It looks fairly reasonable to me. I don't want to get in over my head.

In which part of "fold in thirds" do you see implied the need of folding in half?

One easy way to fold in thirds is:
Make a small mark at the top of the square where you think is one third.
Fold the other side to that mark and make another small mark.
Fold the first side to the new mark.

Continue and you shouldn't need more than 5 tries to get to a very accurate division of thirds.

Make 16 and remove 4 on each side. Some time I use to do that, even if it is a waste of paper though. Also if you are dividing all the paper in half I think the grid will be more accurate
Pobody's nerfect.

Thanks for all of the help :) One more question. Are the blue lines valley or mountain folds, or is that up to the folder to interpret? I can probably figure it out, but it would be less frustrating if I didn't do it backwards the first few times :P

That is a horrible choice for a beginner. I can't think of any good ones at the moment, but this is about the worst first CP I've ever seen.

I'd recommend Kamiya's Ryu-zin 3.5 over that. Seriously.

I'm sure you were being sarcastic ... I've seen the Ryu Zin CP. Thanks for taking the time to write something like that though ... must be a slow day.

Hi, what model is this a CP for? It's hosted on your photobucket account, but it would be good to know who actually designed it...
