Fractal by Roman Diaz

Post by Hirngespinst »

Hey there. I'm finally looking for help after days of confusion.
A week ago I found the Crease Pattern of the model on Roman Diaz Flickr Page but were unable to collapse it. At the end it should look like this.

On the CP I see lots of bird, frog and fish bases. Maybe I make it more complicated than it really is. But I can't think of a way to begin with.

Is there anyone who might give some hints about how to get started with this particular CP?

Thanks in advance.

Someone on the French Forum was so nice to post some pictures on the subject:

From what I can see, the same set of molecules (I hope I'm using the word correctly here) is repeated inwards.
True to the nature of fractals, the pattern could be repeated for infinity, both inward and outward.

However, for now, I would suggest just working on the outermost set - the 12 squares around the outside of the crease pattern.
And use a large sheet of paper.
Then add another set inside those once you've mastered them.
You can keep adding sets, but keep in mind that each subsequent set will be one quarter the size of the last, so they get very small very fast - each of the outer squares is already 1/4 of the length of the square of paper. The second set of squares is 1/16, the third is 1/64, and the fourth is 1/256.
(Or use the photo diagrams linked above. ;-) )

A very interesting crease pattern, and model, in any case.

I think that depends on how good you are at folding small stuff and how many iterations of the fractal you want to fold.

The example in the link provided by Anna was made with 24cm paper. And it looks like it has the same number of iterations as the one Roman posted on Flickr.

Thanks Anna! The Pictures on the french forum were really helpful and i got it now. Two days ago I thought about starting with a blintz base but got nowhere.

Maybe I'll post a picture of the finished model in a few days or so.

@Falcifer: I made the same observations that you made and tried to work my way from the border to the inside. But if you try it that way you can't even finish the first level.

Can't get this model done, the photo's on that french forum are confusing and unfortunately the instructions are in French, a language I can't just grasp.

anybody want to help out with diagrams (even hand drawn would help) or a clear video??

The pics are very clear to me. Even without translation. I'm going to try this soon. :D

You think?? wait till you try them, they make no sense. I can get till the first picture but then it gets completely screwed, Blintz on top?? Then you don't get what's in in the second photo at all.

you have to blintz unfold and then open sink along the crease you just made. Hope this helps

So what I get from the french site is that you have to blintz first, then another blintz, do an open sink fold, blintz again and do an open sink fold again?? It just doesn't make any sense at all.

If you have the view of pic one, fold the four corners to the middle and unfold. Open sink those corners. This should get you four small triangular "bases" (kinda similar to a waterbomb base)

From that to the third pic shouldn't be that hard. You only need to fold some 22.5 degree angles, with the pics you should be able to figure it out.

At the third, you need to rabbit ear the right part of each section two times and the left part one time. With section I mean each of those triangular "bases", although they don't look like them any more. Make sure you use the parts that are the closest to the square beneath.

Hope this helps you figure it out :).

I more or less figured it out, still have to work on some small details but I'll manage it.

Thanx FlareglooM, without your tip I would still be in the dark with this model.
