help on models from 'genuine origami' by jun maekawa

Post by boehm187 »

hi. i'm new here, and have just started doing origami. i got the book 'genuine origami' by jun maekawa, and started working through the models but have encountered two snares so far. i've been able to do most of the models i've tried, but for some reason i couldn't figure out how to get from step 5 to 6 on the elephant under fundamental models, and today couldn't figure out why it seemed impossible to do the crease fold on the frog in step 29... on mine, a fold was in the way on the inside. i think this may have something to do with steps 15-17. on step 18, the color-change step said not to unfold step 15, but i thought you had to unfold it to do step 16. when i was on that step i thought maybe i had confused something because i had to make a fold that i did not see on the diagram. any help here would be greatly appreciated. thanks so much.

Welcome to the forum! :D

er, first let me ask (because sometimes my computer plays tricks on me or it's a forum issue) did you post the same topic twice? You don't have to do that, someone will get to you as soon as they can.

As for the elephant, you flip the blintz fold you made in step 3 over so you're on the other side of the paper. Now you rabbit ear fold but you let the flaps on the back (from the blintz in step 3) spread out and you should get the result in step 6.

Hope I helped!

Now for the frog (didn't remember which step was which so I went and refolded it :) Prepare yourself for a large/rambling post!!
What you do in step 16 is you tuck the flap (the two little triangles under the mountain fold) underneath by mountain folding it, while spreading the "step 15" folds in the process to get the result in step 17 (try mountain folding the flap first, and when you get what it looks like in step 17, spread the two "step 15" folds out to get the result).
I think in step 18 since you have to sort of outside reverse the flap for color changing the author was just warning you to be careful not to unfold something else.
As for step 29, did you move two flaps over in step 28 to get the shape in step 29? The first flap should be locked (which might be why you said the flap was on the way inside).

If any of this sounds confusing, please tell me...

Alright, that's weird...but thanks for telling me.

Good luck with your folding. :D

EDIT: I think the double post was a glitch on my computer because it's gone now.

Wow, nice (I really like those eyes, makes it really life-like)! What kind of paint did you use? Acrylic?

Did you ever fold anything else from the book?
